Odisha NMMS Scholarship 2026-27: Exam Date, Eligibility, Pattern and What to Do Now
Read in another language:
If you’re reading this in the middle of October, the form-filling part of Odisha NMMS 2026-27 is already behind you, or it has passed you by. Either way, the exam is on 6 December 2026, and that’s what matters now. So this page skips the “how to register” story and focuses on what you can still do: check that your form was accepted, grab the admit card early, and use the eight weeks you have left.
Fresh update (7 November 2026)
The Ministry of Education has extended the last date to submit NMMSS 2026-27 applications on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) to 15 November 2026. Institute-level (L1) verification must be completed by 30 November 2026 and district-level (L2) verification by 15 December 2026. Students must complete One Time Registration (OTR) before applying. As of 30 October 2026, 90,483 fresh and 1,99,531 renewal applications had been submitted.
A quick refresher first. NMMS is the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship, a central scheme, but every state runs its own test. In Odisha that’s the Directorate of Teacher Education and SCERT. The test is for Class VIII students in government, government aided and local body schools, and the family income has to be modest.

Read This About the Dates First
When we opened nmms.odisha.gov.in on 12 October 2026, the home page was still showing last cycle’s schedule, with an exam on 1 February 2026. That’s not a typo on our side. The 2026-27 dates below come from the SCERT guidelines as Odisha education websites have reported them, and those websites don’t agree on everything. Some give 17 September as the last date to apply, others say 2 October. The exam date and the admit card window, though, are the same on every page we checked.
So use the dates here as a good guide, and let your Headmaster or the District Education Office have the final word.
Important Dates
| Activity | Date |
|---|---|
| Online application and hard copy to school | 17 August to 2 October 2026 (reported) |
| Headmaster sends forms to the DEO | By 28 September 2026 (reported) |
| DEO verification and validation | By 8 October 2026 (reported) |
| Admit card download | 30 November to 6 December 2026 |
| NMMS exam | 6 December 2026 |
| Result | Likely April to May 2027 |
6 December is a Sunday, and the admit card window shuts on the exam day itself. Don’t leave the download for that morning. If your name or roll number is wrong, you want a week to fix it, not an hour.
Who Can Sit the Odisha NMMS Exam?
The Ministry of Education guidelines and the Odisha notification say the same thing here, more or less.
You need to be a regular Class VIII student in a government, government aided or local body school. Your parents’ income from all sources can’t go above Rs 3,50,000 a year. You also need at least 55 percent in Class VII (50 percent for SC and ST students).
Who’s out? Students of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, students of private schools, and students of residential schools where the government pays for boarding, lodging and teaching. The Odisha guidelines name Sainik School, KGBV and OAV as examples.
There’s one rule most websites leave out. When the final selection happens, you must also have at least 55 percent in your Class VIII exam (again 50 percent for SC and ST). Passing the test isn’t enough on its own. So don’t let your school marks slide this year.
How Many Scholarships Does Odisha Get?
The Centre sets a quota for every state, based on enrolment and child population. Of 1,00,000 scholarships across India, Odisha’s share is 3,314. They’re split across 30 districts, with reservation for SC, ST, SEBC and physically challenged candidates.
What does that mean for you? A score that’s comfortably safe in one district can fall short in another. Comparing marks with a cousin from a different district tells you very little.
Scholarship Amount and Duration
A selected student gets Rs 1,000 a month, so Rs 12,000 a year, paid by Direct Benefit Transfer into a bank account. It starts once the student is promoted to Class IX and can run for four years, up to Class XII.
It doesn’t run on autopilot, though. To keep it, the student needs:
- clear promotion from Class IX to X, and XI to XII, in the first attempt
- at least 60 percent in Class X (55 percent for SC and ST) to continue at the higher secondary stage
- to stay a regular student in a government, government aided or local body school
- to register and renew on the National Scholarship Portal every year
Two more rules are worth knowing. A student can take only one scholarship under any central government scheme. And if there’s a gap of a full academic session in studies, the scholarship is treated as discontinued and can’t be revived.
Documents in the NMMS File
Most of this was due at school level already. Still, if the Headmaster or DEO office calls you back for a correction, this is what they’ll be looking at:
- the printed, signed copy of the online form
- a current year income certificate of the parent or guardian
- a caste certificate for SC, ST and SEBC candidates
- a disability certificate or UDID card for physically challenged candidates
- the Class VII marksheet

What If You Missed the Application?
We couldn’t find an official extension notice for Odisha after the reported closing date, so please don’t count on one. Go and talk to your Headmaster or the DEO office. Ask a simple question: was my form received and validated? And don’t pay anybody who says they can “get you in” now. The process is free and goes only through the school and the DEO.
Missing NMMS isn’t the end of the road for scholarships. Odisha runs its own state scholarship system, and our Odisha Scholarship Portal guide shows how to register and track status. If a parent is a registered construction worker, look at the Odisha Nirman Shramik Kalyan Yojana, which supports workers’ children with education assistance. And for fee relief, there’s the Odisha Gyanodaya scheme. Each has its own rules, so read them before you plan around any of them.
Odisha NMMS Exam Pattern
Two papers, both multiple choice, both set by the national guidelines.
| Paper | Questions | Time | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mental Ability Test (MAT) | 90 | 90 minutes | Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, critical thinking |
| Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) | 90 | 90 minutes | Science, social studies and maths of Classes VII and VIII |
Students with a disability get extra time. As for the marking scheme and OMR rules, read the instructions on your admit card. We haven’t found an official statement on negative marking, so we won’t guess.
Odisha NMMS Syllabus
There’s no separate NMMS syllabus. The questions come from Class VII and the Class VIII chapters you’re studying now. That’s actually good news, because your school books are the base.
The MAT covers analogy, classification, number series, pattern perception and hidden figures. The SAT has physics, chemistry and biology under science, history, geography, political science and economics under social studies, and mathematics.
Here’s where students slip: they revise only Class VIII. But the SAT pulls from both years, and a lot of easy marks sit in Class VII chapters that nobody has opened since last year.
An Eight Week Plan
From 12 October to 6 December you’ve got about eight weeks. Here’s a simple way to split them. This is our suggestion, not an official schedule, so change it to suit your school’s timetable.
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 and 2 | Class VII maths and science revision, plus daily reasoning questions |
| 3 and 4 | Class VII social studies, then Class VIII maths |
| 5 and 6 | Class VIII science and social studies, with chapter tests |
| 7 | Full MAT and SAT papers with a timer |
| 8 | Weak topics, light revision, admit card and centre check |
A few habits will do more for you than extra hours. Solve 15 to 20 reasoning questions every single day, because MAT improves by repetition, not by reading. Work through old SCERT Odisha papers to see how questions are framed and which chapters keep coming back. Sit three full 90-minute practice papers before the exam, since plenty of students know the answers and still run out of time. And keep an error notebook: every wrong answer, with the reason next to it.
How to Download the Admit Card
The admit card comes through the student login on the official portal.
- Open nmms.odisha.gov.in.
- Click Student Login and enter the details you got at registration.
- Open the admit card link and save the PDF.
- Check your name, roll number, school, category and exam centre.
- Print two copies.
If something is wrong, go to your Headmaster or the DEO office straight away. The roll number is generated by the DEO after validation, so any correction has to go through them.
How Selection Works
You have to clear both MAT and SAT, with at least 40 percent in aggregate across the two papers. For SC and ST students it’s 32 percent. Crossing that line doesn’t guarantee a seat, since there are only 3,314 of them and they’re filled district wise and category wise by merit.
If two students end up with the same total, the Odisha guidelines look at the MAT score first and then at age, with the older candidate getting preference.
When Will the Result Come?
SCERT hasn’t announced a date for this cycle. Some Odisha exam sites expect a provisional merit list around March 2027 and the result in April or May. Last year’s result came in mid May 2026, according to Careers360, so something similar is a fair guess. It’s still a guess until SCERT confirms.
After Selection: the National Scholarship Portal
Clearing the state test is only half the job. To actually get the money, the awardee has to be promoted to Class IX, register on the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in), complete One Time Registration and the verification steps, and keep a bank account that’s active and ready for DBT. The school and the district officer then verify the application. After that, it’s an annual renewal with the previous marksheet and a continuance certificate from the school.
Nothing gets paid without verification at school and district level. So stay on good terms with your school’s nodal officer.
Mistakes We See Again and Again
Waiting for the last day to download the admit card is the classic one. Close behind: skipping Class VII chapters for the SAT, treating 40 percent as the target when seats are limited by district, letting Class VIII marks fall below 55 percent, forgetting the NSP registration after selection, and paying agents or coaching centres who promise a guaranteed seat. Nobody can promise that.
